The Smoke Rise Sailing Club News
The Smoke Rise Sailing Club

The Smoke Rise Sailing Club began informally in 1953 when the first Sailfish was launched in Smoke Rise. A year later Sunday afternoon racing was initiated, and in 1957 the sailing Club was given official status, when by-laws were enacted and the first Commodore was elected.

In 1969, Smoke Rise hosted the U.S. National Sailfish Championship and two of our members became national champions.

The Sunfish has since replaced the Sailfish as the mainstay of the Club and the Smoke Rise Sailing Club today is part of the International Sunfish Class Association (ISCA) with its own registered Fleet Number 565 (see link).

Competitive racing for sailing club members starts every Sunday at 11 am from Memorial Day through Labor Day, for which points are accumulated over the season and trophies awarded on Labor Day. Dedicated Regattas are sailed on Labor Day, Smoke Rise Day, Independence Day and the Club hosts and participates in a number of inter-lake invitational regattas and events with sailing clubs in the surrounding areas.

One of the Club’s major efforts is the sponsorship of a junior sailing program under the guidance of experienced sailing instructors during July and August every year.

Come talk to us and join us. Sailing on our beautiful lake is one of the main attractions of living in this wonderful community.

Sunday Regattas

Sunday races begin at 11am and usually last in the neighborhood of 2 hours. Enjoy a chilled beverage after the race and stay for the BBQ.
